I have no idea what about 10.7.3 broke those icons but considering that the Quark interface seems like a one-of-a-kind thing in the Mac world, it could rely on some service in the OS that was removed, like Rosetta ending with Snow Leopard, but not nearly as significant. The end result of those decisions was a major delay affecting some of our QuarkXPress customers, and we’re sorry for that.Thanks for the comments but I really doubt that the disappearance of a few icons constitutes a major re-write of the program. We kept having to make tough engineering resource decisions over the past year that we judged the best for our customers overall.

The QuarkXPress 10 Mac OS XTension porting work loomed as a mountain we couldn’t really start climbing until we had cleared away some major obligations (the ports involved converting all code from Carbon to Cocoa, which is a serious change). We’re a small 4-man company, severely engineering-resource-limited (there’s really only one engineer who could do the work, Chris Roueche). It’s been a very long time since we’ve released any news about our XTensions for QuarkXPress 10 under Mac OS X-the Windows port was done mid-last-year-, mostly because we had no good news to share.

The current scheme was also the cause of a lot of confusion, because we also have a 6-month upgrade grace period, which means it was never clear to most people when they’d need to pay for an upgrade, or use the auto-upgrades we send (many of which get lost in spam or sent to the wrong person). The current perpetual-for-a-given-major-version-and-previous-versions-plus-annual-upgrades-when-you-upgrade-InDesign licensing scheme is just too confusing for most situations, and not ideal since pretty much all of our customers are upgrading each year with Adobe in any case that scheme made sense when it was introduced in 2000, with Adobe only upgrading InDesign sporadically every 18-24 months. Like just about everyone else in the industry (including Adobe) has been doing, and as we’ve promised for some years, we’re moving to a subscription model for our licenses. This will affect everyone going forward, so we’re giving you a heads-up a month ahead of the big change, and we will be attempting to contact every user via email, pointing to this message.
